Quick Hits
(Email to a Friend)
Yayyy! Quick Hits is back and again
spreading the love to all our inked-up, hair-mussed, indie rocker friends.
Each month, Quick Hits
writer Darby Dixon will
give you several bits of data to help your all-important indie rock purchase
decision: a photo of the band or album cover to stoke your fantasies; a spot
review -- so we feel like we actually did something; a thumbs up or thumbs
down buying guide, so we
can exert our mighty market power, and an MP3 or WMA sample, so you can tell us to
go screw and decide if you like the bands yourself.
Send all feedback,
review/interview requests, and free CDs & ticket hook-ups to Darby at darby@arrivistepress.com.

Lylas |
Lessons for Lovers |
|
|
Fictitious Records |
 |
Guys, notice your girlfriend's dazed eyes
and secret smile? She's crushing on another indie-pop vocalist. You
thought things couldn't get worse after Ben Gibbard and Colin Meloy, but
here comes Lylas's Kyle Hamlett crooning his way into her heart.
It's hard to protest when the music's this damn good. On their debut
full-length, Lessons for Lovers, Lylas's quietly intricate
folk-pop arrangements are all dreamy, classic cool, with melody to burn.
Plus their songs are about teenage phantasms and seances and sexy
siamese twins. You have to admit, that's just awesome. |

The Radium Screen |
White Faces |

LaLaLa Records |
 |
The Radium Screen is a pair of guitar guys
who decided to try dabbling in experimental electronic noise. If only
all dabbling surprised like White Faces, a collection a
four darkly textured, inanely catchy gems. Not catchy in a Beach Boys
summery fun'n'sun way. More like in a staring at the frozen nighttime
lake from deep inside your mind way.
Check out "Dirty Blonde," then grab the EP to get the rest of the
dramatic descent.

The Art of Building a Moat |

Heatstroke Records |

Having a rough week? And it's only
Tuesday? Jetpack UK would like to jumpstart your weekend. On The Art
of Building a Moat, they've got the driving guitar rock to do it
with.
This EP is plenty of fun, from the bouncy "Mathematics" through the
edgier "Synthesizer" and on to the closing fist-pumper "Stonehands."
Fist-pumper? Okay, so it sometimes sounds a little unfashionably
theatric. But it's not worth worrying about when you're about to smile
your way through blowing off the rest of your week. |
